Robot Scanning System Employs AFI 5000

An AFI 5000 digital shape scanner integrated with a ComScan robot will demonstrate engine block scanning at the International Machine Technology Show, IMTS 2006, in Chicago, IL. The ComScan robot is produced by Gaspardo & Associates, Inc of Aurora, IL. The digital shape scanner is produced by Dimensional Photonics International, Inc. (DPI) of Wilmington, MA.The integrated system will be demonstrated at Gaspardo’s IMTS booth (D-4429) from September 6 through 13, 2006.

ComScan is a six-axis robot specifically designed to automate digital shape scanning. It moves a scan object laterally, vertically and rotationally to provide line-of-sight visibility to faces and features of the component being scanned. In addition, the system moves the 3D scanner in a semi-spherical path so that it can capture side walls and upward facing surfaces of the object. Complete visibility of all features, with the exception of those on the bottom of the part, provides automated scanning of an entire component with only one or two set-ups.

According to Steve Gaspardo, founder and president of Gaspardo & Associates, “Individual scans take only a few seconds, but when an object requires 10 to 15 scans, or more, repositioning the part or scanner has a big impact on time and throughput. With ComScan, most components can be scanned without manual repositioning of either the part or scanner.” Gaspardo notes that ComScan makes multiple part color map inspection projects practical and cost efficient. “With ComScan, companies can do more reverse engineering and inspection projects faster with less direct labor expense.”
